English Week 2021

English Week 1st – 5th November 2021

Our theme for English Week this year was ‘G.R.I.T.’; guts, resiliency, intensity, and tenacity; qualities to acquire in paving success in anything we do.  Our English teachers designed different games to engage and encourage students to participate in their class’ allotted time.  Our aim was for students to learn through play.  This year, students who participated would receive a souvenir, a coloured wristband, upon completing a task.  Our wristbands represent five aspects of our theme, with a quote relating to each theme printed on them.

Morning Assemblies

The week’s morning assemblies were managed by our school’s ‘Little KOL’ team.  The team took turns in introducing English Week as well as airing our two song dedication sessions.  Students of the whole school were given a song dedication form the previous week during their NET lesson and was taught how to use song dedication as a mean of showing appreciation to someone important to them.  The ‘Little KOL’ team received a tremendous number of slips from the students and it was great to see so much dedication and positive comments for their teachers.  A number of messages were chosen at random for broadcast through Campus TV live.

Recess Activities

For P.1 and 2, we incorporated phonics into their spider-web game, where students listened to the teacher pronounce a target word and looked for the beginning letter on the alphabet mat.  For P.3, we used ‘Pictionary Air’ with related vocabulary for the students to battle against each other within the same class.  For P.4 and 5, students were given a chance to work in groups to partake in a treasure map challenge where they could move along the map when they have answered questions relating to G.R.I.T. correctly.  There were also tongue twisters and I.Q. questions along the corridors for all students to enjoy during the recesses in which students of all grades can join.

Special Activity

As with last year, we invited Dove Theatre to showcase a live drama performance for our KS2 students.  To align with our theme this year, the company chose the story of ‘Robin Hood’, to show courage and perseverance.  The interactive performance was highly enjoyed by our P.6 students, who were invited to watch it live in the school hall, while P.4 and 5 watched through livestream in their respective classrooms.  As for KS1, they further learned about elements of G.R.I.T. and made colourful paper chains of events that showed their way of applying G.R.I.T.  in their life.

Overall, English Week 2021 was a huge success, with the majority of students taking part in different games every day of the week.  The souvenirs were highly sought-after and students were willing to bring their friends along and encourage each other during the games.
